New Zealand and Australia will face each other in the much-awaited finale of the 2021 T20 World Cup to clinch their maiden world title in this format in international cricket. Both finalists have found a way to win their tight semi-final matches and will be looking forward to putting on a show at the Dubai International Stadium on Sunday. New Zealand defeated England by five wickets to reach the final. Australia, on the other hand, won the second semi-final against Pakistan by an equal margin.
With confident victories in their last matches, both the teams can be expected to come out all guns blazing and reach the finals early.
Looking at the past encounters between the two sides across the format, cricket fans can certainly expect a match to crack.
The Aaron Finch-led side has won nine of the 14 matches played between the two sides, while New Zealand have managed to win only four times. One match ended in a tie. Captain Kane Williamson will be aiming to close that gap and win his second title of the season after winning the World Test Championship (WTC) after beating India in the final earlier this year.
Australia has been the more dominant side in recent history, having won all four previous clashes. The last time New Zealand won a T20I against Australia was in Dharamsala in the 2016 edition of the T20 World Cup held in India.
Probable playing XI
Australia David Warner, Aaron Finch (c), Mitchell Marsh, Steven Smith, Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Matthew Wade (wk), Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Adam Zampa, Josh Hazlewood.
New Zealand Martin Guptill, Daryl Mitchell, Kane Williamson (c), Tim Seifert (wk), Glenn Phillips, James Neesham, Mitchell Santner, Adam Milne, Tim Southee, Ish Sodhi, Trent Boult.
Australia’s limited-overs captain Aaron Finch feels Matthew Wade is likely to move up the order to fully realize his batting abilities in the ICC T20 World Cup final against New Zealand on Sunday.
Wade and Marcus Stoinis came together when the chips were down against Pakistan in the T20 World Cup semi-final in Dubai on November 11, with the former cashing in on a catch dropped by Hasan Ali to hit three sixes off three balls to propel Australia into the final . For the second time in the history of the tournament.
“I thought they (England) could win, but to be fair they played too well too soon,” Lewis told AFP.
“They were going well but lost to South Africa. And we were in flight when we lost to New Zealand.
“Waiting for a good game. It’s hard to say. I think Australia will beat New Zealand but the Kiwis have beaten a better team (in the semifinals), so they have also come out stronger.”
Annoying triple six
Many people wearing Pakistani T-shirts arrived at the venue in the sweltering heat of Dubai, yet still grappling with the disappointment of Pakistan’s defeat in the knockout game after an unbeaten streak in the Super 12 stage.
“Very upset by Matthew Wade’s last over – the triple six,” 12-year-old Safiyan Choudhary told AFP.
Safiyan hailed from England with his father and is backing both the Black Caps to win their second global crown by beating India to win the inaugural World Test Championship in June.
“I am Pakistani-Englishman, so it was expected that one of them passed, but neighbors Australia and New Zealand came here,” Safiyan said.
“Nice match, very intense. I hope New Zealand get the win and I think they can win it. Remember they beat India in the Test final.”
Virat Kohli’s India lost their opening two matches to Pakistan and then New Zealand after losing to Pakistan and then New Zealand early to leave their semi-final fate on the others.
New Zealand’s win over Afghanistan took India out of the competition, but some Indian fans still came to watch the final.
Manish Garg, who came from India on a business assignment, told AFP: “It is disappointing that India is not here, but that is why I got the ticket so easily yesterday.”
“I want Australia to win. This is my favorite team and have played incredible cricket so far. Their last win over Pakistan was the best.”
