The film was formally announced in March 2018. Principal photography of the film began in November 2018 in Hyderabad which went on until August 2021, owing to the delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The film was shot extensively across India, with a few sequences in Ukraine and Bulgaria. The film’s soundtrack and background score is composed by M. M. Keeravani with cinematography by K. K. Senthil Kumar and editing by A. Sreekar Prasad. Sabu Cyril is the film’s production designer whilst V. Srinivas Mohan supervised the visual effects.
Made on a budget of ₹5.5 billion (US$72 million), RRR was initially scheduled for theatrical release on 30 July 2020, which has been deferred multiple times due to production delays and followed by the pandemic. The film was released theatrically on 25 March 2022, and opened to positive reviews from the critics with praise for the performances and screenplay. With ₹2.4 billion (US$31 million) worldwide on its first day, RRR broke the record for the highest opening-day collection earned by an Indian film. The film grossed over ₹11 billion (US$140 million) worldwide, making it the tenth highest-grossing film of 2022, and set several other box office records for an Indian film, including the second highest-grossing film in India and the third highest-grossing Indian film.
In 1920, British governor Scott and his wife Catherine visit Adilabad forest, and forcefully take away Malli, a talented girl from the Gond tribe to Delhi. To rescue the girl, the tribe’s protector Komaram Bheem arrives in Delhi. The Nizamate of Hyderabad warns Scott’s office about Bheem’s mission. Police officer A. Rama Raju volunteers to catch Bheem in order to get a promotion. He attends a meeting of independence activists and proposes to assassinate Scott. Bheem’s aide Lachhu asks Ram to join them. However, he flees after sensing that Ram is a police officer.
Ram and Bheem accidentally meet and team up to save a boy. They bond with each other while hiding their original identity. Ram helps Bheem to get close to Scott’s niece Jenny. Bheem visits the governor’s palace on Jenny’s invitation where he silently meets Malli, assuring her rescue. Ram captures Lachhu to ask about the whereabouts of their leader but in vain. Lachhu gets hold of a banded krait snake and throws it onto Ram. Lacchu warns Ram that the bite kills him within an hour without anti-venom, known only to the Gond people. Ram finds his way to Bheem who treats him. Bheem confesses to Ram, revealing his mission. Bheem and his men barge into the palace with a truck full of wild animals. However, Ram obstructs him as a police officer. Furious, Bheem fights off Ram and goes to rescue Malli. Ram stops him while Scott holds Malli hostage at point-blank range, leading to Bheem’s surrender.
In a flashback, Ram’s father Venkata Ramaraju rebelled and sacrificed his life against the British. Venkata took a promise from Ram that he’d deliver a weapon to every person taking part in the rebellion. At present, Ram is promoted as a special officer for capturing Bheem, who is sentenced to death via public execution. Scott offers mercy if he kneels but Bheem refuses despite heavy lashing by Ram. Bheem’s song inspires the people to rebel, and he is taken away by the officers. Venkat’s friend Venkateswarulu informs Ram that his goal of seizing weapons is going to be fulfilled since he is appointed as in charge of an arms shipment. However, Ram feels guilty for his actions and prioritizes saving Bheem and Malli. He requests Scott to execute Bheem in the outskirts as a part of his plan. However, Scott recognizes the ploy and injures him. Bheem frees himself and fights the guards off while Ram shoots and kills a guard over Malli’s head to save her. Misunderstanding this as an attack, Bheem beats up Ram and escapes with Malli.
A few months later, Bheem and his men are hiding in Hathras, but British forces arrive there. Sita, Ram’s cousin and fiancée, senses the danger and drives away the British by lying that the place is experiencing a smallpox outbreak. She tells Bheem that Ram is sentenced to death as he went against the British to save his best friend. Bheem regrets his actions and promises Sita to rescue Ram. Bheem sneaks into the barracks with the help of a blueprint given by Jenny. He frees Ram from the prison, taking him on his shoulder as the latter is unable to walk. Together, they fight the police and escape. Bheem treats Ram; however, the police attack them in the woods. Ram takes a bow and arrows from a shrine of Lord Rama and retaliates. Bheem joins him with a spear. They fight off the police and head towards the palace. They blast a motorcycle into a room full of TNT, and the building explodes. Bheem retrieves the weapons and delivers them to Ram. Catherine is killed in the chaos while Scott is killed by Ram and Bheem. They reunite with Sita, Jenny, and others.

The film was officially announced in March 2018,[7] with the tentative title RRR, an abbreviation for Rajamouli, Ram Charan, and Rama Rao.[8] The tentative title RRR was later confirmed to be the film’s official title as Rajamouli felt that a universal title across the languages was essential for a film of such scale.[9][10] Rajamouli’s father K. V. Vijayendra Prasad gave the original story and Rajamouli scripted the film, which he worked on for six months.[11] In September 2018, writer Sai Madhav Burra was signed for the dialogues for the film in the primary language (Telugu),[12] whereas dialogues in other versions were written by Madhan Karky (Tamil),[13] Varadaraju Chikkaballapura (Kannada), Mamkombu Gopalakrishnan (Malayalam) and Riya Mukherjee (Hindi).[14][failed verification] Rajamouli retained several technicians from his previous projects. The crew consists of M. M. Keeravani as the music director, K. K. Senthil Kumar as the director of photography, A. Sreekar Prasad as the film editor, Sabu Cyril as the production designer, V. Srinivas Mohan handling the visual effects supervision, and Rama Rajamouli as the costume designer.[15] Nick Powell was the stunt director for the film, and handled the choreography for the climax action sequences in the film.[16]
Prior to the start of film production, both Rama Rao and Charan had attended a special workshop in mid-November 2018, in order to train physically and intensively for their roles in the film.[17][18] In March 2019, Rajamouli revealed that the film’s core idea came from The Motorcycle Diaries (2004), saying that he was fascinated by “how a character named Che transforms into a revolutionary called Guevara and have structured the characters of my protagonists around a common point, on similar lines”. Charan plays Alluri Sitarama Raju and Rama Rao plays Komaram Bheem. The plot explores their stay in Delhi of the 1920s before they begin the fight for their country; however, the story is entirely fictitious.[19] He added that there had a coincidence between the two Telugu tribal leaders and the events surrounding over them.
In March 2019, Rajamouli finalized the cast. The film marks the Telugu debut[citation needed] of Ajay Devgn and Alia Bhatt.[22][23] Bhatt was paired opposite Charan in the role of Sita, while Devgn would have an extended cameo.[24] Tamil actor Samuthirakani was roped in to play a crucial role.[23] British actress Daisy Edgar-Jones was signed to be paired opposite Rama Rao,[23] however, she left the project in April 2019 citing personal reasons.[25] Olivia Morris was cast as her replacement in November 2019. The same month, Hollywood actor Ray Stevenson of Thor fame, was cast as the lead antagonist Scott, with Alison Doody roped in to play Lady Scott.[26] Chakri, Varun Buddhadev and Spandan Chaturvedi were the child artists for the film.[27]
In an interview with Deadline Hollywood, Rama Rao said that they had carried out major research to portray their characters on screen. He was put on an 18-month training programme to get the right physical appearance.[28] The Hans India reported in March 2019 that Devgn will appear in the second half of the film during the flashback episodes, with his screen time being around 40 minutes.[29] In June 2020, a report in Mumbai Mirror claimed that Devgn will be playing the role of a nationalist and a guru (transl. mentor) of Komaram Bheem and Alluri Sitarama Raju.[30] Reports claimed that Keerthy Suresh and Priyamani were approached for a role in the film,[31][32] before Shriya Saran confirmed her role opposite Devgn in June 2020.[33] Rahul Ramakrishna,[34] Chatrapathi Sekhar[35] and Rajeev Kanakala are cast in other supporting roles.[36][better source needed]
In June 2020, Bhatt was trolled by the netizens following the death of Sushant Singh Rajput, where she was accused of nepotism. A few fans also called to replace Bhatt in RRR.[37][38] However, Bhatt denied the news of her leaving the film and being replaced by Priyanka Chopra,[39] and joined the sets in December 2020.[40] She learnt to speak Telugu for the
film.[41][42]

Sabu Cyril served as the production designer for RRR.[15] Prior to starting the first shooting schedule, the team had constructed a set at an aluminium factory located in Hyderabad, for filming an action sequence.[43][44] A manduva house was constructed for the film actors and technicians. A 5-minute walk away from the film’s shooting location, a building was deciphered as Rajamouli’s new office, allotting individual rooms for the cast members and a huge discussion space at the centre of the house. Separate blocks were dedicated for music sittings, editing, story discussions, training rooms and costumes, with mini-warehouses for storing properties and equipment.[copyright violation?][45] The Aluminium factory set designed was considered the major filming location[citation needed] where the first schedule of the film’s shooting was held.[43] In June 2020, it was reported that ₹180 million (US$2.4 million) was spent for a set replicating an entire village in Gandipet, where the team planned to film the sequences in this location post-COVID-19 lockdown.[46] A set resembling the 20th-century Delhi was recreated at the Ramoji Film City,[40] where the team had undergone an extensive action schedule for 50 days, which involved night shoots.[47] Another huge set was constructed by the art direction crew for a song shoot featuring Charan and Bhatt.[48] The song was reported to replicate the 1920s period and had a historical touch.[citation needed] The promotional music video for the film titled “Dosti”[citation needed] was filmed in July 2021, at a specially constructed set at the Annapurna Studios designed by Sabu Cyril and photographed by Dinesh Krishnan.
The film’s launch event with a puja ceremony was held on 11 November 2018, which saw the attendance of noted personalities from the Telugu film industry,[51] including Prabhas and Rana Daggubati, whom had worked with Rajamouli in the Baahubali franchise.[52][53] Principal photography of the film commenced on 19 November 2018 in Hyderabad at a specially erected set at an Aluminium factory in the location.[43][44] It is the first Indian film to be shot on Arri Alexa LF and Arri Signature Prime lens.[54] The filming schedule was completed on 6 December 2018.[55] The team took a brief break before commencing the film’s second schedule on 21 January 2019 at Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad.[56] An action sequence consisting of 1000 artists was filmed during February 2019.[57] An extensive schedule was filmed in Vadodara for 10 days in March 2019.[58] Another schedule was planned in Pune, Maharashtra, however, it was called off following Charan’s injury on the sets.[59] Rama Rao too faced a minor injury on the sets,[60] resulting the team to take a break during the schedule.
After their recovery, an action sequence featuring Charan, Rama Rao and 2000 junior artists was shot, reportedly at a cost more than ₹450 million (US$5.9 million).[62] Introductory sequences of Rama Rao and Charan costed the production upwards of ₹400 million (US$5.2 million), a sum considered higher than the total budget of many small Indian films.[63] In August 2019, the production headed to Bulgaria to film the second schedule where the crew shot crucial scenes featuring Rama Rao.[64] The shoot was stalled during October 2019 as Rajamouli had to attend a screening of Baahubali: The Beginning (2015) at the Royal Albert Hall in London.[65]
In November 2019, two key sequences[citation needed] and a song featuring Rama Rao and Charan were filmed at the Ramoji Film City.[66] The film’s official social media handle tweeted that 70% of the film’s shoot had been wrapped as of November.[67] Rama Rao headed to the Modakondamma Temple forest area in the Paderu–Araku road to film a 5-day sequence in December 2019.[68][69][needs copy edit] In January 2020, Charan began shooting for the film at the Vikarabad forest region, where an extensive night shoot was filmed for a week.[69] Ajay Devgn joined the film’s shooting schedule on 21 January 2020 and wrapped his portions during February.[citation needed][70] The film was halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020.[71] After the governments of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana granted permission to resume film shooting during June 2020,[72] a 2-day trial shoot was planned, but it was halted following the spike in COVID-19 cases in Hyderabad.[73] The filming was resumed in early October 2020 following the ease of the COVID-19 lockdown in India,[74] and Rajamouli shot for the promotional teaser for the film, titled “Ramaraju for Bheem”, during this schedule.[75] Abiding to social restrictions related to the pandemic, the production unit was accommodated in a hotel in Madhapur and were barred from coming into contact with outsiders not belonging to the production.[74]
In late-October, the team canned night shoots for the film and stills were revealed by the official social media handles for the film under the tagline #RRRDiaries.[76][77][78] The action sequences, which took place for 50 days, were completed within November 2020,[47] and the production moved to Mahabaleshwar to film a brief schedule in November 2020,[79] and completed within 5 days.[80] Alia Bhatt began filming her portions in December 2020,[81] and key scenes were filmed in Hyderabad during the same month. The filming of the climax scenes began in January 2021.[82][83] Action director Nick Powell choreographed a few climax war-sequences in March 2021.[84] A special song shoot was held during March 2021, which featured Charan and Bhatt.[48] Though the filming was halted again due to the second wave of COVID-19,[85] it was resumed in June 2021.[86] In June 2021, the makers announced that except for two songs, the filming was completed and Charan and Rama Rao had completed their dubbing work in two languages,[87] and had completed the talkie portions for the film.[88] In August 2021, the final schedule of the film took place in Ukraine.[89] The song “Naatu Naatu” was shot during the schedule at Kyiv.[90] Barring a few shots, the entire shoot was completed on 26 August 2021.[91] In an article published in March 2022, by News18, it was reported that atleast 3000 technicians have worked on RRR, while nine co-directors also contributed to the film. It took over 300 days to complete the shooting of the film.
RRR began with a budget of between ₹3.5 billion (US$49.7 million) and ₹4 billion (US$56.8 million) in 2019.[93] However, the budget was overrun by around ₹1.5 billion (US$20 million) due to the delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, with the film’s final budget estimated to be ₹5.5 billion (US$72 million).[94][3] In March 2022, according to the producer’s application to the Government of Andhra Pradesh for ticket price hikes, the film’s budget was ₹3.36 billion (US$44 million) excluding the Goods and Services Tax and the remunerations of the director and star cast.[95]
Post-production of the film began simultaneously with the wrapping-up and continuation of film production. The dubbing process began during April 2020, with Rama Rao and Charan dubbing their portions for the film from their homes, and thus being the first persons to do so.[96][97] Both actors gave voiceovers for each other’s introduction teasers.[98][99] In June 2021, the film producers reported that both actors had completed dubbing for the film.[100] On 26 August 2021, after filming was completed, the film entered into an extensive post-production phase.[101] With three years already invested in the film, Rajamouli’s decision to spend less time in post-production compared to his other films was due to future commitments, rising production costs, and filming postponements caused by COVID-19 restrictions.[102] The dubbing works were completed by late October 2021.[103] Both Rama Rao and Charan dubbed their lines for four languages for the film, namely, Telugu, Tamil, Hindi and Kannada.[104]
Srinivas Mohan is the visual effects supervisor of the film, along with Framestore and the Moving Picture Company (MPC), the film’s principal visual effects studio.[105] Alzahra VFX, NY VFXWaala, Redefine, Knack Studios, Makuta VFX, Digital Domain, Rhythm and Hues Studios, Method Studios, Rodeo FX, Technicolor VFX, Legend3D, The Third Floor, Inc, Clear Angle Studios, Halon Entertainment, 4DMax, and Cinesite, among others, are responsible for some of the other visual effects in the film. In an interview, Mohan discussed the utilization of pre-visualization, gammage[definition needed], lidar scanning, and light stage technology in the film.[106] Extensive visual effects work took place for more than six months during the post-production process.
RRR was scheduled to have special premieres across India and the United States on 24 March 2022[157][158] before its worldwide theatrical release on 25 March.[159][160] Earlier, it was scheduled to be theatrically released on 30 July 2020.[161] However, in February 2020,[162] the release date was revised to 8 January 2021, a week prior to the Sankranthi festival (14 January 2021).[163][164] Due to the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown, which led to production disruption, the film’s release was put on hold.[165] Rajamouli said that the new release date would be confirmed after the completion of shooting.[166] On the eve of Republic Day (25 January 2021), a 13 October 2021 release date, coinciding with the eve of Dusshera weekend, was announced[167][168] The release date was again deferred, citing theatrical restrictions across the world due to the second wave of COVID-19 and its aftermath.[169][170]
In early October 2021, the theatrical release date was changed to 7 January 2022, ahead of the Sankranthi festival.[171] However, a week before the release, the film producers announced that the film’s release would be postponed indefinitely due to the increasing number of COVID-19 cases, fuelled by the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant.[172][173] In mid-January, two tentative release dates were announced pending the pandemic situation: 18 March 2022 and 28 April 2022.[174][175] Later, the producers finalized a 25 March 2022 release date.[176] The film was intended to be released in Telugu along with the dubbed versions in Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, and other Indian and foreign languages.[177][178]
In January 2022, a public interest litigation (PIL) was filed in the Telangana High Court to restrain the film for being released, alleging that the film distorts history of Alluri Sita Rama Raju and Komaram Bheem.[179] The High Court quashed the petition in March, observing that film did not tarnish the reputation of two revolutionaries as claimed.[180]
Following political and film industry backlash after reducing ticket prices last year, Chief minister of Andhra Pradesh Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy issued a ticket price hike in Andhra Pradesh in mid-March 2022.[181][182] Per Cinematography Minister Perni Venkataramaiah, the filmmakers received government approval to increase ticket prices by ₹75 (98¢ US) during the first ten days after the film’s 25 March release.[183]

M. Keeravani’s music and acting performances of lead actors. He further wrote that RRR outshines even the director’s previous venture Baahubali.[231]
